What is Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM)?
Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is the practice of monitoring patient vitals, medical readings, and health conditions without in-person contact. Clinicians can monitor patient’s diagnostic readings from their office, while patients take daily readings on easy to use medical devices from the comfort of their own home.
RPM provides clinicians with timely information about the patient’s condition, reduces the time, costs and difficulty of traveling to the doctor’s office, and lowers the risk of infection. RPM helps patients receive treatment for chronic health conditions in a much more effective and convenient manner. Paired with telehealth, patients who traditionally had issues traveling to a hospital or doctor’s office can receive lifesaving care that previously may have been unattainable.
Health issues trackable by RPM:
- Hypertension
- Weight issues
- Heart conditions
- Asthma
- Diabetes
- Sleep apnea
Common RPM devices:
- Weight scales
- Pulse oximeters
- Blood glucose meters
- Blood pressure monitors
Benefit to Patients From Remote Patient Monitoring
According to a Consumer Technology Association’s study – “Connected Health and Remote Patient Monitoring: Consumer and Industry Use” – multiple benefits noted by a group of over 2000 patients, 1000 physicians, 60 endocrinologists, and 40 nurses.
Common benefits according to patients:
- Detailed information on personal health
- Faster access to healthcare services
- Greater influence on their wellbeing through ownership of health data
Common benefits according to healthcare professionals:
- Improved patient outcomes
- Improved compliance rates
- Patients taking an increased ownership of their own health
The Benefits of Remote Patient Monitoring Are Wide Ranging
Health Tech
RPM programs have allowed patients to have better access to healthcare, improved health outcomes, lower financial burdens, as well as improvements to their overall quality of life. According to Dr. Saurabh of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, “Any patient who has chronic disease is a patient who would benefit from RPM.” Physiological data captured by glucometers, weight scales, blood pressure cuffs, and pulse oximeters can allow clinicians to identify patient health risks, provide them with quality care on-par with in-patient monitoring, all the while reducing their expenses. As patients become more comfortable with technology-enabled services (such as RPM), these benefits will be come increasingly more adopted by the healthcare industry – benefiting all who are involved.
CMS Reimbursement for Remote Patient Monitoring
For CMS approved RPM, Medicare offers reimbursements for patient enrollment, remote monitoring, and device reading management. Total reimbursement increases with additional time spent communicating with patients or caregivers. RPM programs that are adding patients regularly will see increased revenues as more patients equates to higher amounts of reimbursement, all the while negating the need for in-person interaction, and the costs traditionally associated with it.

Remote Patient Monitoring Trends
The COVID-19 pandemic only accelerated the trend of RPM’s increased rate of adoption in the medical community. With a need to expand healthcare access across an aging population, RPM now allows clinicians and healthcare providers to provide lifesaving care to individuals who just a few years ago otherwise would have lacked it.
North America and Europe’s growing geriatric population, along with an increased need to care for chronic illnesses, are some of the main driving forces behind RPM’s increasing adoption. With advancements in wireless technologies and portable systems, coupled with established reimbursement structures, RPM is becoming a mainstay in the care of elderly going forward.
How Healthcare Providers Can Benefit From Changes Brought By The Pandemic
Forbes
According to Forbes, “COVID has changed how and where quality care is delivered.” Hospitals are no longer the epicenter of patient care. Patients are increasingly starting to prefer smaller, more personalized healthcare delivery made possible through telehealth services. As patients look to receive personalized healthcare from the comfort of their own home, remote patient monitoring will increasingly become a necessity for clinicians and providers. With RPM use up 572% from 2019-2021, it is evident to see that this is already becoming reality.
The healthcare industry is evolving into one of heightened transparency, personalized patient experiences, and increased flexibility. The use of telehealth services and remote patient monitoring technology was expedited by the COVID-19 pandemic but highlighted the patient desire to receive personalized care and transparent data at reduced costs. Remote patient monitoring use has dramatically increased, a trend that will continue, due to the benefits for all parties involved. Patients want to continue to receive clear post-discharge instructions, easily record vitals, and communicate with clinicians effectively and efficiently – desires that will continue to full the use of remote patient monitoring technology going forward.

Does remote patient monitoring reduce outpatient appointments?
Medical Economics – February 14, 2023
Research recently published by the Institute of Applied Health Research at the University of Birmingham has shown that the use of remote patient monitoring could significantly reduce outpatient appointments without compromising patient outcomes or satisfaction. With reduced outpatient appointments, scarce health resources can be efficiently redirected to patients with concerning symptoms, reducing their wait time and prioritizing their treatment.
The Future of Remote Patient Monitoring with Digital Medicine Society
Market Scale – October 18, 2022
The shortages of doctors and clinicians that the healthcare industry is currently experiencing is one of the most pressing issues it has recently faced. The adoption of remote patient monitoring technology is a direct result of this, as high-quality RPM allows patients to receive care, under reduced resources, without having to make trips to see clinicians in-person. A trend that is expected to continue, the use of remote patient monitoring looks to alleviate the stress that the healthcare industry has been under, all the while providing for increased levels of patient care.
Survey: Consumers Prefer Telehealth Over In-Person Visits for Routine, Mental Healthcare
Mobi Health News – September 29, 2022
A recent J.D. Power study shows that consumers are increasingly preferring telehealth to in-person care for routine health visits, with their top reasons including “convenience, the ability to receive care quickly, and the ease of access of health information.” This falls in line with the larger trend of telemedicine’s increased adoption among patients, as it has remained a large part of patient experiences especially compared to pre-pandemic levels.
How ‘Workforce Sharing’ Could Help Fill Gaps In Home Care
Home Health Care News – September 20, 2022
Home care providers might need to work together to provide telehealth services for patients as demand increases. 80% of home healthcare offices have been turning down possible clients due to supply issues – a problem that could be solved with organizations traditionally in competition against each other engaging in “workforce share.” Companies with extra patients/staff could aid the shortcomings of another, along with technology sharing, to keep up with the ever-growing industry.
AMA Survey: Doctors More Optimistic About Digital Health Tools
Mobi Health News – September 14, 2022
Physicians are increasingly viewing digital health and remote patient monitoring practices as beneficial to overall work efficiency, improved patient care, and reduced clinician stress levels. The increased rate of adoption of digital health tools has allowed for improved health for patients, while streamlining technological and administrative burdens historically omnipresent in medicine at the same time.
